This may seem boring but you can achieve some pretty fantastic results by knowing this simple technique. This 'Tip'
has two parts to it. First the creation of the texture and second, an application for the texture. On with the 'Tip'! Start off with a new file 200 x 200 pixels Grayscale with a white background. 1. Add some noise with Filter>Noise>Add Noise, try Gaussian around 400. 2. Filter>Blur>Gaussian. Try using a setting between 0.1 and 1.0. 3. Next apply Filter>Pixelate>Facet. 4. Now Filter>Blur, thenFilter>Blur More. 5. Next apply Filter>Stylize>Emboss. Try different angles, Height around 3, amount 200 to 300. 6. Next Image>Adjust>Levels. There must be a number of real black areas so that the 'texture' works in the alpha channel. (Surface texture of paper can be adjusted later by Image>Adjust>Auto Levels before loading it as a pattern if the paper does not respond properly.) Now the texture is turned into a pattern (Tile) that can be used to fill any size of canvas. 7. Choose Filter>Other>Offset at 30,30. Undefined areas choose Wrap Around. 8. Clean up lines created where the offset filter created lines in the image. Use the clone tool with options aligned and a small soft brush. Save the texture as a file. Give the file a name PAPERTEX.PSD (this will be used in a later step). Re-open the texture file Select>All. Next Edit>Define Pattern. You can now close this file. That is the end of the first part. Now for the application to see it at work. If you have come this far you might as well go all the way and finish the 'Tip'. The nicest effect is to use the paper texture in a section channel. 9. Open a new file 500 x 500 pixels RGB with a white background. 10. Create channel #4 using the Channels palette options or the new channels icon. This will now be the active channel. (If the channels palette is not visible go to Window>Palettes>Show Channels). 11. Fill channel #4 with a pattern using Edit>Fill and use Pattern, opacity 100%, Mode Normal. (You may notice some small details that need to be cleaned up in your PAPERTEX.PSD. Because of the repeating tile small faults become more evident.) 12. Load Channel #4 as a selection, using Select>Load Selection>Channel #4. 13. Go to the channels palette and make the RGB channels active. The RGB Channel is made active by clicking the channel name 'RGB'. 14. Hide the selection (Ctrl-H or Cmd-H). 15. Now the 'Paper' can be drawn on and the texture shows through. Try using a pencil or brush with soft and hard edges. |
